December 19, 2011: The Forgotten Supermen - Bob Hastings

The Superman Super Site is proud to introduce a new weekly series entitled "The Forgotten Supermen" where, each Monday, we will feature an actor that has portrayed the Man of Steel in a particular form of media such as television, film, or radio.

This week's forgotten Superman is character and voice actor Bob Hastings who was the voice actor behind Superboy in the "Adventures of Superman" filmation cartoon.

Hastings got his show business start in radio on Coast-to-Coast on a Bus (NBC) and after the Second World War as the voice of Archie Andrews in a program based on the popular Archie comic book series on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Hastings made the transition to television smoothly in 1949 in early science-fiction series including Captain Video and Atom Squad. His first recurring role was as a lieutenant on Phil Silvers' Sergeant Bilko series in the late 1950s.

Most of his career has been spent in television, where Hastings is remembered for roles including Captain Binghamton's yes-man Lieutenant Elroy Carpenter on McHale's Navy, bar owner Tommy Kelcy on All in the Family and Captain Ramsey on General Hospital.

Hastings has also done voice work for animation and commercials, including Beany on Beany & Cecil, The Raven on the Munsters series, Superboy in the Superman/Aquaman cartoons of the 1960s, D.D. on Hanna-Barbera's Clue Club, and in recent years, the voice of Commissioner Jim Gordon on the animated Batman series.

Hastings is the brother of longtime As the World Turns star Don Hastings. He has been married to wife Joan (Rice) for over 50 years and has four children, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hastings continues to tour the country as a participant in various Old-Time Radio Conventions reading scripts for such shows as Archie Andrews and The Bickersons.
