November 1, 2012: Superheroes 'Fly' Outside of Children's Hospital

Children of all ages who are patients at Spectrum Health DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan were treated to a Halloween surprise with appearances by Superman, the Hulk, Flash, Spiderman and Captain America on Wednesday.

Dangling from ropes outside the 14-story of the hospital, employees of Modern Window Cleaning (the company contracted by the hospital for window washing) donned the superhero costumes to help bring cheer and smiles to all the hospitalized children as a holiday surprise.

"I was sitting here watching television, I heard clank, clank and I'm looking and wow there's Batman! It kind of surprised me he was swinging around here," said patient Fran Drahuse. "I thought, am I in Never Never Land? What's going on here?"

The idea for the amazing surprise came from a child life specialist and the window cleaning company.

"People were kind of just in their zone, then when you drop down they just have a big smile on their face and it was really cool to see," said Modern Window Cleaning employee Tommy Hubbell in an interview with local Grand Rapids NBC affiliate, WBBH. "I don't think of myself as a superhero but to make people laugh and smile when they're down on their luck I think it's a good thing to do."

Other patients and hospital staff members as well as on-lookers outside the hospital said the event brought a huge smile to their faces and really helped turn their day around.
