August 30, 2012: Composer John Williams Talks Life & Career

World renowned composer John Williams recently spoke to Classic FM about his life and work.

In the exclusive interview, the multi-Oscar winner talks candidly with film music expert Tommy Pearson about the writing process and what it was like creating scores for some of the biggest and most iconic movies of all time. He also reveals his anxieties about his creativity, commenting: "It's my character to never to be completely satisfied and always be at least 10% insecure about whether I have got the things right."

Here's an excerpt from the interview in which Williams touches on composing the iconic score to "Superman: The Movie":

Pearson: "When you compose a theme do you try to make it recognisable or does it just become recognisable?"
Williams: "I don't think that every theme should be the kind of theme that is immediately recognizable and be memorable. I guess what I try to do, writing a theme for a film, is try to write a theme that belongs to this film, that you can't imagine this film without that theme, and when you hear that theme you'll associate it with the film itself. That for me is my challenge. If I try to write a theme for Superman [I have to think] does this belong, is this about him? Is this what I wanted to hear with the culturalization that I have, with my limitations. If it is then remembered by people, if it's associated with the film that’s one thing, if it's remembered after and beyond that, that's a plus that I actually hadn't planned on and certainly had not consciously worked to do. That would be pandering beyond the needs of the film which I don't think that I've every consciously tried to do."

During the course of the interview, Williams also speaks fondly about composing the scores to "Jurassic Park" and "Schindler's List" as well as why more opera composers should have written sequels and why he still writes with paper and pencil. Offering a summary of his life and work, he adds, "I am really one of the most fortunate people on Earth."
