June 13, 2013: Metropolis, IL Falls Short in Superman World Record Attempt

by Neil A. Cole

One of the biggest highlights at the recent Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL was the attempt to reclaim the Guiness World Record for "Most People Dressed as Superman" which the town initially set in 2008 when 122 fans dressed up as the Man of Steel.

The most recent record was set by 566 Sears employees who gathered together in Hoffman Estates, IL on June 5, 2013 which beat the record previously held by the Canadian energey company, Nexen Inc. which earned the title when 437 employees donned the iconic red and blue costume in October of 2011.

With a Guinness Book of World Records representative on hand to make it official, a large crowd of Superman fans turned out with hopes of beating the record set by Sears and bringing the record back to Metropolis. Unfortunately the official number of participants came in at 268; far short of the 567 needed to reclaim the world record.

Whether or not the City of Metropolis will try again during the 2014 Superman Celebration remains to be seen but one thing is for certain, fans are determined to bring the world record back to the Ohio River town at some point in the near future.
