May 3, 2011: George Reeves Birthplace is Destroyed

The Woolstock, Iowa house that was the birthplace of "Adventures of Superman" star George Reeves has fallen to bulldozers.

An article posted by RadioIowa.com states that a demolition crew tore down the century old home where Reeves was born in 1914 late last week. Reeves and his family moved to California soon after he was born.

Over the past decade, many Superman fans and Woolstock residents attempted to raise enough money to restore the residence to its original condition including holding George Reeves Memorial Festivals in 2006 and 2007. However, after years of standing vacant and becoming more dilapidated, the regrettable decision was made to tear down the home due to safety issues.

Director of the George Reeves Memorial, Veronica Guyader stated in January, 2011 that "monies that had been raised for the home's restoration are now being used for the memorial marker that will be placed at the site. Those who have donated have been notified."

There is currently no date set for when the memorial marker will be placed at the site.

Reeves died in June, 1959 at his Hollywood home from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.
