April 29, 2011: Superman's Hometown Battles Flood Waters

The recent string of bad weather in the mid-south has caused significant flooding along the banks of the Ohio River in the "Official Hometown of Superman", Metropolis, Illinois.

While flood waters are localized mainly to the riverfront area, Harrah's Hotel and Casino, one of the largest local employers and biggest tourist attractions, is closed indefinitely and the ripple effects are staggering.

According to local NBC news affiliate WPSD, all 700 employees of Harrah's are still getting paid but the city is missing out on at least $18,000 in tax revenue each day.

As much as Harrah's would like to hurry and re-open, they can't until all the goes back into the river where it belongs.

"As you get around closer to the casino entrance, you kind of head down and that is now under water," Harrah's General Manager Mark Osterhaus, said.

"It's really just the one small area where the turnstiles are and you normally enter the casino. All the carpets dry all the walls are dry, no damage at all."

Harrah's said they're looking into their options to be better prepared for floods like this in the future.

The flood waters are predicted to crest sometime between Sunday and Tuesday of next week and are not expected to have any effects on the 2011 Annual Superman Celebration which takes place June 9th - 12th.
