April 18, 2012: Art Gallery Offers Original Superman Painting by Gottfried Helnwein

An original painting titled "Superman and Lois Lane with the 1st Edition of 'Superman' 1938" by famed artist Gottfried Helnwein is currently available from Munich, Germany based gallery, Hampel Fine Art.

Helnwein is a painter, draftsman, photographer, muralist, sculptor, installation and performance artist. He is known for using a wide variety of techniques and media.

The Hampel Fine Art website offers the following description of the painting:

Superman flying and holding Lois Lane in his right arm and the 1938 first edition of the Superman Comic in the left hand. There is an explosion in the background, probably of the planet Krypton, the Superheros destroyed home planet. This theory is also strengthened by the inclusion of a green stone below the picture. It is very likely that this stone is kryptonite, a fictional mineral from the Superheros' home planet Krypton. Apart from magic the kryptonite cripples the Heros' super human strength, just as his secret love for Lois Lane.

The framed painting measures 31.5 x 22.8 inches (80 x 58 cm) and is signed by Helnwein and dated "88". It is valued at an estimated price of € 15.000 - 20.000.

As an added touch and homage to the Man of Steel, a replica piece of Kryptonite is inserted underneath the painting.
