January 24, 2012: Historic Theater in Superman's Hometown Under New Ownership
The historic Massac Theater in Superman's Hometown of Metropolis, Illinois is officially under new ownership.
At the Monday evening Metropolis City Council meeting, the mayor and council members agreed to sell the theater for $15,000 to Larry Ward, personal manager and biographer of "Adventures of Superman" star Noel Neill.
"Noel and I had our eyes on the Massac for a long time, but I never really acted on it until this past summer," stated Mr. Ward in an email to the Superman Super Site. "I am hoping to bring it back to life - or at least put a roof on it!"
The Massac Theatre was built in 1938 and has remained relatively empty for the past 34 years during which time the building has suffered much deterioration.
According to http://www.wpsdlocal6.com, Ward's proposal to the city is to attempt to re-create the theater as it looked in the 1940's.
A full restoration is expected to be completed in two years.
