Posted by Neil Cole

Academy Award winning composer Ken Thorne who began composing scores for films in 1948 has passed away at the age of 90.

In 1980, Thorne was commissioned to write the music for "Superman: II" as composer John Williams chose not to return to score the film due to obligations with other projects.

Williams recommended Thorne who ultimately used frequent excerpts from Williams' original "Superman: The Movie" score while writing minimal original material.

His work on the blockbuster movie would earn Thorne a Saturn Award nomination by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for "Best Music". Thorne would go on to compose the musical score for "Superman: III" as well.

Thorne was also known for his work on the 1966 musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" for which he won an Oscar. He also wrote the incidental score to the 1965 Beatles film "Help!" and the 1995 CBS TV movie "A Season Of Hope" which earned him Grammy and Emmy nominations, respectively.

Thorne passed away on July 8th and is survived by his wife, Linda, and twin daughters Emily and Claire.
