Guests riding the "Superman: The Ride" roller coaster at Six Flags New England will no longer have the option of wearing virtual reality headsets following their recent removal by the park.
"At SFNE, VR was moved to Mind Eraser for this year due to the massive lines it caused for Superman," states Theme Park Insider writer AJ Hummel. "That is the primary reason Mind Eraser got new trains and an extensive refurbishment over the off-season."
"Supposedly the contract with Samsung is up after Labor Day weekend, so VR will be ended chain-wide after that date (at least until a better system is developed)," adds Hummel. "While I'm not 100% sure, what I've heard is that executives aren't very happy with the performance of the equipment and guest response has been generally mixed, so the Samsung contract likely won't be renewed."
The virtual riding experience equipped riders with Samsung Gear VR headsets to feel the heart-pumping adrenaline of steep drops, inverted loops and powerful twists and turns as gyros, accelerometers and proximity sensors synchronized all of the action in an incredibly realistic 360-degree virtual reality world.
As of this writing, the VR experience is still available on the "Superman Krypton Coaster" at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, TX and the "Superman: Ride of Steel" coaster at Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
