May 6, 2015: CBS Orders Full Season of Supergirl

CBS has put in an official order for a full season of DC Entertainment's dramatic tv series, "Supergirl".

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series based on the iconic character and starring Melissa Benoist will premiere this Fall. Here's an excerpt from the article:

Supergirl had a somewhat bumpy road to the network's schedule. Early buzz indicated that the drama co-starring Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh and David Harewood faced trouble and was being shopped to sibling network The CW, though the series was considered too expensive for that to realistically happen. The tide, as it tends to do this time of year, changed after CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler — who has been looking for dramas with strong female leads — saw the final cut and loved it.

The bigger question for CBS will be where to schedule Supergirl as the younger-skewing drama on paper doesn't seem to be well-suited to pair with any of its existing lineup. Multiple sources suggested CBS could slot it for the family-friendly Sundays at 8 p.m. slot or pair it in the summer with other sci-fi fare like pricey big-swings Under the Dome, Extant and Zoo.

In addition to Benoist, the series will star Laura Benanti as Kara's birth mother Alura Zor-El, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Kara's foster sister Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, Jeremy Jordan in the role of Winslow "Winn" Schott (aka Toyman), David Harewood as the villainous Hank Henshaw, and Calista Flockhart as Catherine "Cat" Grant.

The series will also feature guest-starring roles from former Superman and Supergirl actors Dean Cain and Helen Slater.

"Supergirl" will focus on Kara Zor-El who, born on the planet Krypton, escaped amid its destruction years ago. And since arriving on Earth, she's been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

The series will be executively-produced & written by "Arrow" and "Flash" executive producer Greg Berlanti and "New Normal's" Ali Adler along with Sarah Schechter.
