April 27, 2015: 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #1' Review

DC Comics has generously provided the Superman Super Site with review copies of Superman related titles currently featuring the publisher's groundbreaking 'Convergence' storyline.

In this review, we look at 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #1' which features a story written by Marv Wolfman and artwork by Roberto Viacava, Andy Owens, and Sotocolor.

The issue kicks off with the Earth-1 versions of Superman and Supergirl meeting with Lucius Fox at Gotham City's Waynetech seeking a way out of Brainiac's dome all while investigating odd occurrences pertaining to their past.

It is ultimately decided to use the Phantom Zone projector to send Superman and Supergirl into the Phantom Zone as a means of exited again outside of the Dome. However, after the two enter the Phantom Zone, things go from bad to worse in Gotham as the Projector explodes and Earth A.D. Apes begin to hit the streets.

Meanwhile, shortly after their arrival in the Phantom Zone, our two superheroes encounter blood-thirsty prisoners who manage to capture Superman while Supergirl is able to escape only to wind up stumbling across an area of the PZ emitting green gas from the ground. The gas causes Kara to see visions of her past as well as a preview of her 'Crisis' death.

The issues concludes with Kara freeing Superman but at the sacrifice of being able to escape the Phantom Zone before the portal out closes.

Marv Wolfman weaves a great storyline for 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #1' and brings back wonderful pre-Crisis versions of both Superman and Supergirl. Wolfman does a great job of showcasing superb chemistry between these iconic characters and their wonderful dialogue only adds to the reader's enjoyment.

The artwork provided by Roberto Viacava, Andy Owens, and Sotocolor is truly epic and done in a style which is somewhat old-fashioned and takes readers back to the pre-Crisis time period. Without going over the top with visuals, the artists manage to set the proper mood for each scene while also throwing in a few excellent splash pages such as Kara's encounter with the mysterious green gas.

All-in-all, 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #1' is a great addition to this groundbreaking storyline which features a solid nod to characters we have not seen in decades. The issue's cinematic cliffhanger is a perfect set-up to the events of the next 'Convergence' title which should prove to be just as exciting.
