February 9, 2016: Shocking Death on "Supergirl" Will Weigh Heavily on Kara

Last night's episode of "Supergirl" entitled "For the Girl Who Has Everything" shocked fans with the unexpected death of one of the key characters to be introduced on the hit series freshman season.

Inspired by the 1985 comic book storyline "For the Man Who Has Everything", the episode involved Non exposing Kara/Supergirl to the parasitic plant known as the Black Mercy which causes it's host to become comatose while it creates a vision of the individual's perfect life by tapping into the pleasure centers of their brain.

This resulted in Kara envisioning her life back on Krypton with her family including her Aunt Astra (Laura Benanti) and her cousin Kal-El (Daniel DiMaggio). However, thanks to the assistance of Alex (Chyler Leigh), Kara is freed from the parasitic plant and sets out to make Non pay for causing the loss of her family all over again.

SPOILER WARNING

During the course of an ensuing duel involving Astra and Hank Henshaw/Martian Manhunter, Alex comes to his aid and uses a Kryptonite sword to stab Astra through the heart resulting in her death. Unaware that her sister is to blame, Hank tells Kara that he is the one that killed Astra.

"The death of Astra weighs heavy on Kara in the upcoming episodes," states executive producer Andrew Kreisberg in an itnerview with EW. "Kara believes in the inherent goodness of people. She thinks that deep down her aunt was more misguided than evil, and if she had more time, she could have brought her back into the light."

"We've seen Astra had some measure of compassion for Kara," Kreisberg says. "As we say on the show, 'Blood bonds us all.' But Non is not blood to Kara. And the loss of his wife, who he truly loves, will make him a very dangerous foe."

Kreisberg goes on to state that the decision to end Astra's storyline was due to Benanti's previous Broadway commitments but that the actress will return in future appearances as Kara's mother, Alura.
