February 8, 2016: Rare Superman Comic and Original Cover Art at Auction

Posted by Neil Cole

Heritage Auctions will hold their "Comics, Comic Art & Animation Art Signature Auction" on February 18th - 20th at their auction house in Dallas, TX.

Among the items up for bids are a 1939 unrestored copy of "Superman #1" by co-creators Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and "Superman #188" original cover art from 1966 by legendary artists Curt Swan and George Klein:

Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC GD 2.0 Cream to off-white pages:

This is the nicest unrestored copy of the much-in-demand key issue that we've offered in nearly six years! Incredibly, during that span we've offered two different copies of Action Comics #1 in higher grades! It may not be as rare as the comic book that introduced Superman, but it may be just as difficult or even harder to find unrestored copies in this grade or better. Prices realized continue to increase appreciably for the issue that ranks #3 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. Co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster retold the origin of their famous creation here, barely a year after Superman's first appearance in 1938. Overstreet 2015 GD 2.0 value = $50,000. CGC census 2/16: 5 in 2.0, 20 higher.

Curt Swan and George Klein Superman #188 Cover Original Art (DC, 1966):

A wonderful full-body image of the (android) Man of Steel, produced in ink over blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 12.25" x 13.5". This piece of Bristol board was then affixed to a printed DC Sparta World Color master cover template (at the time of creation) with added logo stat, paste-up word balloon and caption box for a total image area of 12.25" x 18.5". There is glue residue from the various bits of paste-up, and the word balloon has slipped a bit. The page is slightly tanned with some handling wear in the left margin, and a staple in the top left margin. Overall in Very Good condition.

Early proxy bidding is currently open for both items at https://comics.ha.com.
