Actress Melissa Benoist has officially landed the role of Supergirl in the upcoming CBS TV series based on the iconic character.
The series will focus on Kara Zor-El who, born on the planet Krypton, escaped amid its destruction years ago. And since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
Benoist is best known for her role as of Marley Rose on season four and the start of season five on the Fox musical comedy-drama television series "Glee."
She has appeared in a number of television series including "Homeland," "The Good Wife," and "Law & Order" and can can currently be seen in the Oscar-nominated "Whiplash," which is up for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Prior to the official casting announcement, both actresses Claire Holt ("The Vampire Diaries") and Gemma Atkinson ("Hollyoaks") had been rumored to be in contention for the role.
"Supergirl" will be executively-produced & written by "Arrow" and "Flash" executive producer Greg Berlanti and "New Normal's" Ali Adler along with Sarah Schechter.
The series will be the fifth based on a DC Comics character currently airing on television including "Gotham" (FOX), "The Flash" (CW Network), "Arrow" (CW Network), and "Constantine" (NBC).
