Heroic Ambition is the new superhero entertainment documentary featuring Scott Cranford, founder of HeroicWorld.com and former official "Superman" of Metropolis, Illinois.
Scott was chosen as the city's Superman in a nationwide contest in 2000 and for eight years, flew from Los Angeles to Metropolis to portray the Man of Steel for the annual Superman Celebration.
If you think you know all there is to know about the Superman Celebration, I can assure you that this documentary will open your eyes to so much more.
Although most of the documentary footage is from 2007, a few glimpses of Celebrations past are featured including Scott (in full Superman costume) and his fiance Marcella's wedding in 2001 at Washington Park where the very first Superman Celebration was held.
The documentary opens with a quick review of the history of Superman followed by a look at Scott's acting career including his first role as Superman in a fan made film entitled "Power Lunch".
Segueing into the 2007 Superman Celebration, the first bit of behind the scenes footage that is featured involves a replacement being sought after to take on the role of Brainiac for the Celebration opening skit.
It is a brief glimpse at the sometimes hectic schedule for those involved with putting on the Celebration and helps you appreciate all the hard work that goes into making it a success.
City residents such as Mayor Billy McDaniel and Jim Hambrick, owner of the Super Museum, are featured in interviews discussing how the celebration has grown. They, along with many others, also talk about Scott's portrayal of Superman and how he has grown into the character over his 8 years in the role.
Viwers are also treated to interviews with celebration staff members from past and present whom offer their own take (sometimes differing) on how the festival has changed and evolved over the years.
Of course, there are also interviews with many of the estimated 30,000 fans who make the annual pilgramage to the Celebration. Young and old talk about all there is to do and see during the 4 day festival and all their memories from years past.
Outside of the Celebration, we get to see Scott be invited to travel overseas to Iraq as Superman where he meets children of soldiers serving in the Iraq war. It is a wonderfully uplifting scene and the looks on the kid's faces is nothing short of heartwarming.
Scott is also featured in a radio station interview talking about his website, HeroicWorld.com, a free superhero entertainment site featuring a collection of 25 new superheroes (all greated by Scott himself), original scroll-along adventures, and other inspiring features slanted towards a younger audience.
Scott has said his "goal was not necessarily to make a great documentary but to make a great Superman movie" and he feels he has achieved this. Not only do I agree 100%, but Scott has also left an inspiring legacy in Metropolis that fans and locals will never forget.
I highly encourage anyone who is considering or has ever been to the Superman Celebration to check out Heroic Ambition. Although the torch has passed to a new Superman in Metropolis, Scott's 8 year portrayal will never be forgotten.
