"Superman III" Costume Sells for Record $200K at Auction

by Neil Cole

An original "Superman III" costume worn by actor Christopher Reeve in the 1983 film has sold for a record $200,000 at Julien's Hollywood Legends Auction in Las Vegas, NV.

The complete dark blue, dark yellow, and maroon costume was featured in the film after Superman has become evil due to exposure to synthetic Kryptonite including the iconic bar drinking and junkyard fight scenes.

The multi-piece costume consists of five components in total: a custom blue knit leotard with the stylized Superman logo sewn into the front with attached maroon trunks, a pair of matching knit tights, a cape, a belt and a pair of boots.

Prior to the auction, the vintage costume had an estimated value of $20,000 - $40,000.
