Warner Bros. Archives Explores the Evolution of Clark Kent’s Costumes on “Smallville”
A new video looks back at the changing wardrobe of Clark Kent throughout the series, culminating in the Superman costume reveal in the final moments of Smallville.
The Warner Bros. Archives takes viewers on a tour through the evolution of Clark Kent’s wardrobe in Smallville, examining how the character’s clothing gradually moved from the everyday look of a Kansas farm boy toward the visual identity of the Man of Steel. The video features Matt Troex and Suki Gonzalez discussing the costumes and the significance of each stage in Clark’s journey.
The journey begins with Clark’s familiar plaid shirts and farm-boy appearance, a deliberately ordinary look that defines the early seasons of the series. By Season 4, Clark has become a senior and joins the football team, bringing with him one of the show’s recognizable Letterman jackets. As the series progresses, his wardrobe increasingly develops a subtle superhero quality, including the blue shirt and red jacket combination that becomes associated with his more heroic activities.
Following Clark’s battle with Doomsday at the end of Season 8, the character adopts a much darker appearance after declaring that Clark Kent is dead. The long black trench coat, high collar and more solemn presentation deliberately evoke the silhouette of a superhero cape. The video also points out that this is the first time Clark wears the familiar Superman symbol, although within the story he is using the Kryptonian emblem to honor his heritage rather than presenting himself as Superman.
By Season 10, Clark’s position has changed considerably. With the Justice League established, he assumes a leadership role and receives a more customized jacket featuring the traditional Superman shield. The progression demonstrates how Smallville gradually incorporated more recognizable elements of Superman’s comic-book identity without immediately putting Clark in the full costume.
The final reveal arrives in the last shot of the series. The video concludes with the iconic image of Clark wearing the Superman costume with the shirt ripped open to reveal the shield, providing the long-awaited glimpse of the Man of Steel that viewers had anticipated throughout the series. As Troex and Gonzalez note, the finished look appears as though Clark has stepped directly out of a comic book.
