Superman Tribute Plaza Receives Approval from Cleveland, OH Planning Commission

Visitors to Cleveland, OH will soon have the opportunity to visit a new plaza paying tribute to Superman after the project received approval from the Cleveland Planning Commission.

The plaza will be located downtown at the Huntington Convention Center and will feature an 18-foot tall stainless steel statue of Superman, a phone booth complete with clothing from Clark Kent, and a bronze statue featuring Cleveland natives and co-creators of the Man of Steel, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster along with Siegel's wife, Joanne pointing and looking up at Superman.

"Philadelphia has Rocky Balboa, Milwaukee has the 'Bronze Fonz.' In Cleveland, we want to bring the 'Man of Steel,'" stated architect and project manager, Nick Slaughterbeck of the Moody Nolan design firm. "Superman is arguably one of the greatest cultural contributions to American pop culture in all of American history. Cleveland should be very proud of that."

The plaza and statues were originally planned to be placed alongside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum. However, in 2018, the developer of the property ultimately decided against allowing the project to be placed at that location.

The approved new location will require a few modifications as requested by the Cleveland Planning Commission including revisions to concrete and grassy areas, a different location for a commemorative plaque, the addition of back-to-back benches, and the creation of an ideal spot for photo and social media opportunities.

The Siegel & Shuster Society non-profit volunteer organization which is dedicated to commemorating and celebrating the creation of Superman in Cleveland will be funding costs associated with the construction of the plaza sculptures and infrastructure while maintenance of the plaza will be handled by the Cuyahoga County Convention Facilities Development Corporation.

A prospective completetion date for the Superman Tribute Plaza has yet to be announced at this time.
