“Superman: The Movie” Returns to the Big Screen at Playhouse Movie Theatre in Randolph, VT
Richard Donner's landmark 1978 Superman film will open the Playhouse Movie Theatre's Visual Effects Film Series on October 23.
“Superman: The Movie” will return to the big screen on Friday, October 23, when Richard Donner's landmark 1978 superhero classic opens the Playhouse Movie Theatre's special Visual Effects Film Series in Randolph, Vermont. The screening is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion with special effects creator Greg Butler.
Starring Christopher Reeve in the dual roles of Superman and Clark Kent, “Superman: The Movie” remains one of the most influential superhero films ever produced. Donner's ambitious production brought the Man of Steel to life with Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Valerie Perrine as Eve Teschmacher, while combining groundbreaking visual effects with John Williams' iconic score and a sweeping cinematic approach that helped establish the modern superhero movie.
The film's visual effects were particularly important to its success. Audiences were asked to believe that Superman could fly, and the production employed miniatures, optical effects, wire work, rear projection, model photography and other practical techniques to create the character's flights over Metropolis, the destruction of Krypton and some of the film's most memorable action sequences. The work earned “Superman: The Movie” a Special Achievement Academy Award for its visual effects.
The Playhouse screening is the first of five films featured in the Visual Effects Film Series, which runs October 23-25 and explores the evolution of cinematic effects through such films as “Jurassic Park,” “Starship Troopers,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “1917.” The October 23 presentation of “Superman: The Movie” is rated PG, with tickets priced at $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors and $7.00 for children 12 and under. Doors open 45 minutes before the screening.
The Playhouse Movie Theatre is located at 11 South Main Street in Randolph, Vermont. For Superman fans, the October 23 presentation offers an opportunity to experience Donner's classic on the big screen while revisiting the practical artistry that helped make Christopher Reeve's Superman a cinematic icon. Tickets and additional information are available through the Playhouse Movie Theatre's official event page.
