Superman Reboot Being Developed by Warner Bros.

Deadline has reportedly confirmed that a reboot of the Superman film franchise is currently in the works at Warner Bros. with author/journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates serving at writer and J.J. Abrams producing through his Bad Robot label along with the production company's Head of Motion Pictures, Hannah Minghella.

"To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor," Coates told Shadow and Act. "I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America's most iconic mythic hero."

Coates gained a wide readership during his time as national correspondent at The Atlantic, where he wrote about cultural, social, and political issues, particularly regarding African Americans and white supremacy. He has published three non-fiction books: The Beautiful Struggle, Between the World and Me, & We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy and is currently developing the 2014 New Yorker article "Wrong Answer" into a full-length feature film starring Michael B. Jordan. He has also written a Black Panther series and a Captain America series for Marvel Comics.

The Superman reboot is reportedly part of Abrams' 2019 half-billion deal with WarnerMedia in which the studio and Bad Robot are developing film & TV projects tied to the Justice League Dark Universe which includes such supernatural members of the DC Universe as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade: The Changing Man, and Zatanna.

"There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn't be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we're beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity," J.J. Abrams said in a statement to Shadow and Act.

"Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world," added Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman, Toby Emmerich. "We're confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel."

At this time, it remains to be seen what effects the reboot will have on the film universe established by director Zack Snyder in "Man of Steel," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and "Justice League" including the future status of Henry Cavill starring once again in the role of Clark Kent/Superman.

We will continue to update this story as more details become available.
