Superman Museum in Carterville, MO Closing its Doors
The Supertam on 66 Superman Museum and Ice Cream Parlor Historic in Carterville, MO has announced their closure after 15 years of business.
Owner Larry Tamminen made the difficult decision to close the business located on historic Route 66 and place it up for sale following a five-month battle with pneumonia and bronchitis which left him hospitalized last year.
"Our hope is that we will find someone who shares that love of Route 66 and the ice cream parlor," stated Larry's sister Terri Edwards in a Facebook post. "Our dream is that someone will want to buy as is and take over the parlor. The streetcar, pavilion and garage behind are all part of it."
Tamminen opened Supertam on 66 in 2006 as a way to combine his two primary loves for Route 66 and the Man of Steel which started when he was a boy racing home after school to watch the latest epsiodes of "Adventures of Superman" the television series starring George Reeves.
"So many travelers from all over the world have stopped and along with the locals since the parlor opened in 2006," adds Edwards. "As someone stated, it is an icon on Route 66 and we would love for that to continue."
In addition to the ice cream parlor, the Superman Museum portion of the building features numerous display cases and items lining the walls showcasing vintage toys, figurines, activity books, board games, newspaper clippings, and autographs including a a 1954 paint-by-numbers set and a Vietnam War-era poster with Superman flashing a peace sign
