Superman Movies Reportedly Shelved in Favor of Supergirl

by Neil Cole

Fans may have to wait quite a while before seeing Superman return to the big screen as a new report states that Warner Bros. is putting any films featuring the Man of Steel on the back burner for the foreseeable future.

Forbes reports that this decision stems from the studio's reworking of their future slate of films based on the DC Comics Universe which originally would have featured characters and plots tied to one another from film to film in the same vein as Marvel Studios. However, Warner Bros. will now be going the complete opposite direction with standalone films that have little or no ties to other storylines including "Shazam!," "Joker," and "Wonder Woman 1984".

With future Superman film projects being shelved for the time being, the studio will reportedly be thrusting Kal-El's cousin Supergirl into the limelight with a return to the big screen for the first time since the campy and critically panned 1984 "Supergirl" movie starring Helen Slater in the title role.

Whether or not Supergirl's leap to the big screen will have any ties to the CW television series or actress Melissa Benoist remains to be seen. As for Henry Cavill, his return to the role of Superman may indeed be delayed but fans will have an opportunity to check out the buff actor in the lead role as Geralt of Rivia on the Netflix original series "Witcher" which premieres later this year.
