"Superman: II" Actor Sir Antony Sher Passes Away at Age 72
Acclaimed Shakespearean actor, Sir Antony Sher has passed away at the age of 72 following a diagnosis of terminal cancer earlier this year.
Superman fans will remember Sher for his brief but memorable and comical role in "Superman: II" as the obnoxious bellhop at the Honeymoon Haven Hotel where Clark Kent and Lois Lane have been sent by Perry White to uncover a honeymoon scam at Niagara Falls.
Not only does Sher offer to give Clark a hand if he needs help lifting Lois across the threshold, he also famously says to "Have a happy... whatever this is" in regard to them using the obvious fake names of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Sher is also well known for his roles in "Shakespeare in Love," "Mrs. Brown," "The Wolfman," and "Erik the Viking," but it was in theatre that he became a renowned name, winning the Olivier award for Best Actor twice - in 1985 for "Richard III" and "Torch Song Trilogy" and in 1997 for "Stanley".
Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2000, went on to play other Shakespearean roles including Falstaff in the "Henry IV" plays, Leontes in "The Winter's Tale," Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice," Iago in "Othello" and the title characters in "Macbeth" and "King Lear".
His last stage roles were as Nicolas in "One for the Road from Pinter One" at the Harold Pinter Theatre with The Jamie Lloyd Company in 2018 and as Jack Morris in "Kunene and the King" with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2019 & 2020.
Sher is survived by his husband Gregory Doran who serves as the Artistic Director of the RSC. The staff of the Superman Super Site extends our deepest thoughts and prayers to the Sher family during this difficult time of mourning.
