Superman Headlines Landmark Comic Book Exhibition at Skirball Cultural Center

Superman stands at the forefront of a sweeping new museum exhibition celebrating the history and cultural impact of the American comic book, as the Skirball Cultural Center presents Inventing America: The Comic Book Revolution, now on display through February 28, 2027. Featuring original artwork, rare comic books and historic artifacts, the exhibition explores how comics evolved from inexpensive entertainment into one of the most influential storytelling mediums in American culture, with the Man of Steel serving as one of its defining icons.
Among the exhibition's highlights is the iconic cover art for Action Comics #1, the landmark 1938 publication that introduced Superman to the world and forever changed popular culture. From that historic debut, visitors follow the evolution of comic books across the twentieth century, examining how legendary characters including Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Archie, Little Lulu and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reflected the hopes, fears and changing identity of America through decades of social, political and cultural transformation.
The exhibition also shines a spotlight on the creators behind these enduring heroes, many of whom were immigrants or members of marginalized communities, including Jewish Americans whose personal experiences helped shape the themes of justice, perseverance and reinvention found throughout the medium. Through original artwork, rare artifacts and historical context, Inventing America traces the comic book's journey from the Great Depression through World War II, the social upheavals of the 1960s and into the dawn of the new millennium, demonstrating how the medium both documented and influenced American life.
Organized by the Skirball Cultural Center and co-curated by Patrick A. Reed and Michele Urton, Inventing America: The Comic Book Revolution offers visitors an immersive look at the artistic, historical and cultural legacy of comic books while reaffirming Superman's place as one of the most enduring symbols in American popular culture. The exhibition remains on view in Los Angeles through February 28, 2027, with docent-led tours, educational programs and related activities available throughout its run.
