The Pickford Film Center, located in downtown Bellingham, Washington, will present a special Independence Day screening of "Superman: The Movie" on Saturday, July 4th, 2026 at 1:00 PM PDT.
Released in 1978 by Warner Bros., the blockbuster classic is widely regarded as one of the most influential films in the superhero genre. The story follows Clark Kent, a survivor from the planet Krypton who is raised on Earth and ultimately embraces his identity as Superman. As he assumes his role as a symbol of hope and justice, he confronts the criminal mastermind Lex Luthor, whose elaborate scheme threatens global catastrophe.
The film features Christopher Reeve in his signature role as Superman/Clark Kent, alongside Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, and Glenn Ford as Jonathan Kent. Its score by John Williams remains one of the most recognizable and enduring themes in film history, closely associated with the character across generations of audiences.
Upon its release, "Superman: The Movie" achieved both critical acclaim and major box office success, helping to establish the modern viability of large-scale superhero storytelling in Hollywood. Its pioneering visual effects, created through practical and optical techniques prior to the digital era, continue to be regarded as groundbreaking. The screening is part of the Pickford Film Center's repertory programming, which highlights classic and culturally significant films in a communal theatrical setting.
