Tom Welling has provided a new update on the long-discussed animated continuation of Smallville, revealing that the project remains a possibility as he and Michael Rosenbaum continue working to obtain Warner Bros. approval. The proposed series would reunite the original cast as voice performers and continue the story of Clark Kent and the characters introduced during the show’s 10-season run.

Welling said the project has progressed beyond a simple idea, with early renderings already created by an artist and a poster prepared for the proposed series. Those materials cannot yet be released publicly, however, because Warner Bros. must first authorize the use of the Smallville intellectual property. Welling and Rosenbaum remain optimistic despite the continuing uncertainty surrounding the project.

The actor also said the response from former cast members has been encouraging. According to Welling, the original performers approached about returning have been enthusiastic about the possibility of voicing their characters in an animated continuation. The involvement of the original cast has remained a central part of the concept since Welling and Rosenbaum began pursuing the project several years ago.

Welling has a particular vision for the story if the series eventually moves forward. He would prefer to begin relatively soon after the Smallville television finale in 2011 and develop a new interpretation of what happened to Clark and the other characters after the conclusion of the live-action series. He emphasized that this is his personal idea rather than a confirmed story direction, leaving the eventual continuity open if Warner Bros. approves the project.

The latest update arrives as Smallville celebrates its 25th anniversary, providing renewed attention to the series and its enduring fan base. For now, the animated continuation remains uncommissioned rather than officially greenlit, but Welling’s comments indicate that the creative team has continued to develop the concept and that interest among the original cast remains strong. The project’s next major step still depends on Warner Bros. granting permission for the series to proceed.
