Regé-Jean Page Lost Out on "Krypton" Role of Superman's Grandfather

Actor Regé-Jean Page ("Roots", "Bridgerton") reportedly auditioned for the lead role Superman's grandfather, Se-El on the SyFy television series "Krypton" but was ultimately deemed a nontraditional casting choice by former Chief Creative Officer at DC Entertainment, Geoff Johns.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Krypton" co-creators David S. Goyer and Damian Kindler were very keen on casting Page, whose father is English and mother is Zimbabwean, in the role. However, Johns shot down the idea with a representative stating the he was following fan expectations that Seg-El should resemble DC's theatrical version of Superman, Henry Cavill.

Set on Superman's homeworld of Krypton 200 years before it's destruction, the SyFy series following the efforts of Seg-El, father of Jor-El, as he attempted to restore the honor of the family name. The series only lasted two seasons with actor Cameron Cuffe ultimately being cast in the lead role.

In 2018, Johns would step down and switch to a writer/producer role. Page went on to star in the first season of the Netflix period drama, "Bridgerton" in the role of Simon Bassett, the Duke of Hastings and is currently filming the action-thriller, "The Gray Man" from directors Anthony and Joseph Russo, the Russo Brothers.
