Original Superman Cape Material Incorporated Into Milly Alcock's "Supergirl" Costume

The legacy of Christopher Reeve's iconic portrayal of Superman will be carried forward in a unique way when audiences see Milly Alcock take flight as Kara Zor-El in DC Studios' upcoming "Supergirl."
Alcock recently revealed that her Supergirl costume incorporates fabric from the original material used to create Reeve's cape for 1978's "Superman," a subtle tribute connecting the next generation of DC heroes to one of the most enduring performances in superhero cinema.
Speaking during an appearance on the "Raiders of the Lost Podcast," Alcock said the film's costume department discovered approximately 16 meters of the original cape fabric, which had been preserved for decades. Rather than remaining in storage, the material was incorporated into the back of Supergirl's cape, creating a direct link between the new film and the cinematic legacy established by Reeve nearly 50 years ago.
The tribute arrives as DC Studios launches a new era for its interconnected film universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Directed by Craig Gillespie, "Supergirl" stars Alcock in the title role alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa.
Reeve's portrayal of Superman in the 1978 film helped define the modern superhero genre and remains a touchstone for audiences worldwide. The inclusion of fabric connected to his costume serves as a symbolic gesture honoring the actor's lasting influence while introducing a new interpretation of one of DC's most recognizable heroes.
"Supergirl" is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on June 26, 2026.
