Details emerging from the script of Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming sequel in the Superman franchise, indicate that one of Superman's most formidable foes, Brainiac, will play a central role in the film.
Director and co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn, shared a first look at the Man of Tomorrow script, which features an anatomical illustration emphasizing the human brain. While the script provides limited narrative details, the imagery and context strongly suggest that Brainiac - known for his obsession with knowledge, intelligence, and the collection of civilizations - will serve as the significant threat that compels Superman and Lex Luthor to forge an uneasy alliance. Gunn has previously described the storyline as one in which Superman and Luthor must confront a "much larger threat," aligning with the characteristics and motivations traditionally associated with Brainiac.
Brainiac is widely regarded as one of Superman's most intellectually challenging adversaries. Unlike many villains, he poses a threat not only through physical force but also through strategy, manipulation, and advanced technology. In Man of Tomorrow, his presence is expected to test both Superman's heroic abilities and Luthor's cunning, providing a narrative that explores the moral and psychological dimensions of their longstanding conflict.
Man of Tomorrow continues the evolving narrative of the DC Universe, building on the foundation established in the 2025 Superman film. Gunn has emphasized that the sequel will present the story from multiple perspectives, highlighting both Superman's responsibilities as a hero and Lex Luthor's complex motivations as a rival and occasional antihero. The interplay between these two characters, now heightened by the presence of Brainiac, promises a story with layered conflict and high stakes.
The film is slated for theatrical release on July 9, 2027, and is positioned to expand the mythology of Superman while introducing audiences to a villain whose intellect and ambition challenge both hero and antihero on a global and cosmic scale.
