James Gunn’s DCU Reportedly Safe Following Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger
DC Studios

The leadership of DC Studios appears set to remain intact as Paramount's planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery moves closer to completion. James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have overseen the development of DC's new interconnected film and television universe since taking charge of the studio in 2022, are reportedly expected to continue in their positions under the incoming corporate structure. The reported arrangement would keep the creative team responsible for launching the new DC Universe in place during the initial transition.

The development comes at a significant moment for both companies, with Paramount's proposed $110 billion deal for Warner Bros. Discovery approaching its anticipated October 6 closing. The transaction is expected to create a new entertainment company operating under the Skydance name, while the individual Paramount and Warner Bros. brands will continue to have their own identities. As the larger corporate changes take shape, the reported continuation of Gunn and Safran's leadership provides a degree of continuity for DC Studios and the projects already in development.

Under Gunn and Safran, DC Studios has been building a slate that extends across movies, television and animation, beginning with Superman and continuing with projects including Supergirl, Lanterns, Peacemaker, The People v. Gorilla Grodd and Man of Tomorrow. Their reported retention does not, however, establish what the studio's long-term relationship with the new corporate ownership will ultimately look like. Questions surrounding future budgets, scheduling, corporate oversight and the degree of creative independence available to DC Studios are likely to become clearer only after the transaction has been completed.

For Superman and DC fans, the immediate takeaway is that the creative direction established by Gunn and Safran is reportedly continuing rather than being replaced as part of the corporate transition. Their ongoing involvement keeps the current DC Universe slate moving forward while the newly combined company determines how its various entertainment operations will be organized. Further indication of the direction surrounding the current DC Universe came from Gunn himself following the announcement of the new Skydance branding. He took to Instagram to share the newly released trailer (featured below), which features a rapid montage of Paramount and Warner Bros. imagery alongside recognizable DC material, including footage associated with Superman, Robert Pattinson's The Batman and the iconic DC logo. The inclusion of those properties provides another notable connection between the incoming corporate identity and the broader collection of DC projects already familiar to audiences.
