Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored Tour Brings Superman Back to the Big Screen

Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored is continuing its 2026 theatrical tour, bringing newly restored works from animation pioneers Max and Dave Fleischer back to theaters and film venues across the United States, with one of Superman's landmark animated adventures among the titles currently scheduled for an upcoming screening.

The 1942 Superman short “Terror on the Midway” is the only upcoming Superman title presently listed as part of the tour schedule. The restored animated short will be featured at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, New York, on September 19th and 20th as part of a larger collection of classic Fleischer Studios shorts. Both programs are scheduled to run from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Originally released in 1942, “Terror on the Midway” was one of the celebrated Superman theatrical shorts produced during the Fleischer era and remains widely recognized for its dramatic animation, atmospheric visual style and cinematic approach to the Man of Steel. The short places Superman in the middle of a dangerous circus emergency after wild animals escape and threaten the public.

The Pleasantville screenings will pair “Terror on the Midway” with a collection of other classic Fleischer Studios shorts restored for modern theatrical presentation. The broader Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored initiative is dedicated to preserving surviving Fleischer films from archival materials and presenting them to new audiences in high-quality restored form.

The restoration project was created by Max Fleischer's granddaughter, Jane Fleischer Reid, and has worked to recover and preserve material from the studio's extensive animation library. Fleischer Studios produced nearly 700 cartoons between 1919 and 1942 and played a major role in bringing characters such as Betty Boop, Popeye and Superman to animated audiences.
