Brainiac Potential Villain in "Superman: Legacy"

Posted on July 31, 2023 by Neil Cole

One of the main villains in director James Gunn's upcoming "Superman: Legacy" film could potentially be Brainiac according to a new post on the official Superman Twitter account.

The post in question reveals three comic book story arcs that Gunn in taking inspiration from for the film including writer Grant Morrison's "All-Star Superman", writer Mark Waid's "Superman: Birthright", and "Action Comics #866-870" (aka "Brainiac) from writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank.

While both "All-Star Superman" and "Superman: Birthright" have been previously referenced, this is the first time that the "Action Comics #866-870" storyline has been attached to the project which features the the return of the original Silver Age incarnation of Brainiac.

The five-issue comic book story arc features the iconic DC Comics alien villain setting his sights on Earth which results in a showdown with both the Man of Steel and Supergirl. The storyline features several major plot developments regarding Superman including the death of Jonathan Kent as a result of an attack on the Kent Farm by Brainiac.

The storyline was previously adapted into the 2013 animated movie, "Superman: Unbound" which was released as part of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series. Directed by James Tucker and scripted by Bob Goodman, the film featured the voice talents of Matt Bomer as Superman/Clark Kent, John Noble as Brainiac, Molly Quinn as Lois Lane, and Stana Katic as Supergirl.

If Brainiac is indeed featured in "Superman: Legacy", this would mark the first time that the character has appeared on the silver screen and the third time the villain has appeared in a live action role following actor James Marsters and Blake Ritson's respective television series portrayals on The CW's "Smallville" and SYFY's "Krypton".

At this time, neither Warner Bros. or James Gunn have confirmed or denied that Brainiac will be featured in the film. "Superman: Legacy" premieres in theaters nationwide on July 11th, 2025.
