"God of War" Director Pitches Concept for a Superman Game

by Neil Cole

Among the highlights at the recent PAX West gaming convention was a panel entitled "The Quest for the Perfect Superman Game" which featured an indepth discussion about the history of games based on the Man of Steel and the struggles to create a perfect one.

Among those featured on the panel was "God of War director Cory Barlog who shared a few pitches for his own take on a Superman game joking that one idea would involve the Man of Steel having a child that he must instruct on being a superhero, a nod to his most recent game in the "God of War" series.

Barlog's first serious pitch for a game would borrow heavily from both the "Smallville" television series and the "Persona" video game series in which players would control a young Clark Kent progressing through normal life and high school as the character slowly comes to terms with his superhero abilities while balancing coming-of-age moments with his superhero alter-ego.

Another of Barlog's ideas would allow gamers to play a version of Superman who must ultimately realize that he can't help everyone. Players would start out with no one not yet knowing who Superman is and only asking for help on a small scale. However, as more and more people are saved or rescued, the cries for help would esculate to the point that the Man of Steel is not able to respond to each request and must come to terms with the resulting consequences.

Barlog's ideas certainly would delve into an unexplored area for a Superman game that focuses heavily on the psychological aspects of the character. Considering that previous Superman games released over the years have had little to no success with gamers, Barlog's ideas may be worth looking further into.

At this time, no new Superman game is officially in development although various rumors indicate that "Batman Arkham" creators, Rocksteady, are supposedly working on a game based on the Man of Steel.
