"Superman: The Movie" Costume Designer Yvonne Blake Passes Away at Age 78

Academy Award-winning costume designer Yvonne Blake who worked on such blockbuster film projects as "Superman: The Movie" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" has passed away at the age of 78 after suffering a stroke earlier this year.

Blake was tasked with creating the original Superman costume design for Christopher Reeve in the 1978 film and helped to establish the iconic look for the superhero character on film and television for many years to come.

Throughout her career, Blake also designed costumes for such various films as "My Fair Lady," "Fahrenheit 451," "The Three Musketeers," The Four Musketeers," & "Nicholas and Alexander" and worked with world-renowned actors including Marlon Brando, Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Omar Shariff, Lawrence Olivier, Gene Hackman and Charlton Heston.

Blake had served recently served as the President of the Spanish Film Academy; a position she was elected to July, 2016.

"I witnessed her enormous generosity, her passion and her dedication, and at her age she chose to work for all of us," stated current Spanish Film Academy President Mariano Barroso. "She took over the Academy in difficult times and her work was decisive for the new stage of modernization that we are experiencing."

Blake is survived by her spouse of 48 years, Spanish director Gil Carretero.
