John J. Sikela (1907 - 1998)
John Sikela was born in Slovakia in 1907. Along with Wayne Boring, he was one of the most important and long lasting ghost artists on Joe Shuster's 'Superman' comic. He joined the studios in 1940, where he worked close with Joe Shuster, doing pencilling and inking work. His solo work featured dynamic panels with big aerial views. Later on, he was one of the main artists on the spin-off 'Superboy' series.
After the introduction of SUPERBOY #1 in 1949, Sikela enjoyed a long run on the title through the latter half of the 1950s and also illustrated several stories for ADVENTURE COMICS. According to Ron Goulart's Encyclopedia of American Comics, Sikela was also the artist of the Siegel and Shuster series Funnyman in both its comic-book and comic-strip forms.
After serving in Europe during WWII that involved fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, Sikela settled down in Avon, Ohio for 50+ years before passing away on March 23 at the New Life St. Joseph Hospice in Lorain, Ohio.
Sikela was 91 and was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
