An original vintage copy of "Action Comics #1" (CGC 0.5) featuring the first appearance of Superman has sold for $408,000 (a record for the grade) at the Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction hosted by Heritage Auctions.

A complete copy, except for the back cover. "The most important comic book ever published" was Overstreet's note about this issue some years ago. This is the first appearance of Superman, and it's the book that started the Golden Age of comics. Superman spawned many imitators, and the character's runaway success established DC as one of the top publishers, a status it has never lost. This first Superman story, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Joe Shuster, also briefly tells the origin of the character. Currently the #1 book on Overstreet's list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics.

A near-mint copy of "Action Comics #1" (graded a 9.0) made headlines in August, 2014 when it sold for $3.2 million which made it the most expensive comic ever sold at that time. Earlier this year, the famous "Rocket Copy" (CGC 6.0) of "Action Comics #1" set a new record when it was sold for $3.55 million in a private deal brokered through ComicConnect.

CGC, the leading third-party grading service for pop culture collectibles, has to date certified 75 copies of the issue, 43 of them unrestored.
