The City of Metropolis officially unveiled a memorial marker earlier today in honor of the late Jim Hambrick, founder of the world-renowned Superman Museum, as part of this year's Superman Celebration. The tribute recognizes Hambrick's extraordinary dedication to preserving the legacy of the Man of Steel and shaping Metropolis into a global hub for Superman fans.
Hambrick, who passed away on December 22, 2024, was a lifelong Superman enthusiast whose passion for the character and his values left an indelible mark on the community. In the early 1990s, he brought his extensive collection and unmatched devotion to Metropolis, Illinois, helping the city fully embrace its identity as the "Official Home of Superman." In 1993, he established the Superman Museum, which today houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Superman memorabilia in the world.
The heartfelt unveiling ceremony was held during the city's annual Superman Celebration and was led by Hambrick's daughter, Morgan Hambrick who was joined by members of the Hambrick family in commemorating the life and impact of a man who turned a small Illinois town into a pilgrimage site for comic book lovers, movie buffs, and pop culture enthusiasts from around the globe.
The memorial marker now stands at the entrance to the Superman Museum, serving as a permanent tribute to Hambrick's vision and the joy he brought to generations of fans. His efforts not only preserved decades of Superman history but also inspired countless visitors to believe in heroes - real and fictional alike.
