The CW along with Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions have announced that "Supergirl" will be cancelled following the upcoming sixth season which will consist of 20 episodes.
Production on what will now be the final season of the series is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks while the sixth season premiere will air in early 2021.
"To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement," stated series star Melissa Benoist via Instagram. "Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She's had that impact on me, too. She's taught me strength I didn't know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we're united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I'm forever grateful."
"I'm so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store," continued Benoist. "I promise we're going to make it one helluva final season."
Based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, "Supergirl" was developed by Ali Adler, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and originally premiered on CBS on October 26, 2015. The series is the third series set in the Arrowverse, sharing continuity with the other television series of the franchise.
Since the second season, the series has aired on The CW and has received generally positive reviews from critics, who have praised the creative direction, the performances, and the themes addressed. A spin-off, "Superman & Lois", is scheduled to premiere in January, 2021.
