Super Museum Acquires Original Prototype of Metropolis, IL Superman Statue

The Super Museum in Metropolis, IL has acquired one of the original prototypes of the city's 15-foot-tall Superman Statue which stands guard over Superman Square in front of the Massac County Courthouse.

After many years of hunting, a tip from a friend was the key to the museum finally being able to track down the 4-foot-tall prototype which differs from the final overall design of the statue.

"It is pretty interesting that Superman could have had a different stance and cape flow," says Super Museum Curator, Morgan Hambrick. "His face could've been so differently sculpted and maybe he would've had more of an airbrushed finish with blushing cheeks and more waves to his hair."

Following fundraising efforts which ultimately raised over $100,000, the Superman Statue was officially unveiled on June 5, 1993 during a grand ceremony and has now stood proudly in downtown Metropolis for 29 years.

"This prototype is a major part of the history of the Giant Superman Statue together with Metropolis, Illinois," adds Hambrick. "It is a small part of the journey to becoming the 'Superman Square' we know and love today."

The statue prototype is now proudly displayed in the "Metropolis, IL" section of the Super Museum while it's full-sized twin is located directly across the street for an almost certain photo-op.
