Matthew Vaughn Expresses Desire to Make a Colorful Superman Movie with Henry Cavill

In a new interview with The Wrap to promote his latest film "The King's Man", director Matthew Vaughn talked about his desire to work with Henry Cavill on a Superman movie which would finally bring the actor back to iconic superhero role.

Vaughn revealed that he had been lobbying to direct a Superman film prior to Warner Bros. bringing in Zack Snyder to direct "Man of Steel" and the ultimate casting of Cavill in the lead role.

"I was desperate to do a Superman film. Desperate. I pitched a big Superman movie before they made Man of Steel," stated Vaughn. "I just got to work with Henry Cavill, which was lovely, on 'Argylle' and he's unbelievable in it. I still think there's room for a new Superman film, but a proper Superman film. A colorful, fun Superman movie. Not a dark one."

Vaughn went on to share his thoughts on the overall dark tone of the Snyder trilogy of films and, while it works just fine with certain superhero characters such as Batman, he is in agreement with most fans that a Superman movie should have the bright and colorful tone which was featured in the Christopher Reeve movies and "Wonder Woman".

"I just thought it was a mistake putting the Batman vibe into the Superman world. I just think they're two separate - they're just not relatable in any way, in my mind. It should be fun. I mean, look, 'The Dark Knight' was obviously different, and it made sense and it was brilliant, as a film and as a comic. But Superman was always... I loved the [Richard] Donner Superman movie, and I think 'Wonder Woman' worked because, I think, 'Wonder Woman' was basically remaking [Donner's] Superman in a weird way. Yeah, I love Superman."

A direct sequel to "Man of Steel" has long been discussed by Warner Bros. but has unfortunately never materialized. In addition, Cavill has been very open over the years in regard to his desire to return to the role and just recently stated that the "cape is still in the closet" should the studio ever decide to move forward on the project.

Cavill is currently starring in the role of Geralt of Rivia in the second season on the Netflix series, "The Witcher" while Matthew Vaughn's latest movie, "The King's Man" premieres in theaters today.
