Wonderland Restaurants recently provided the Superman Super Site with a review sample of their Wonderland At Home "Mother Box" meal kit which is filled with innovative food and drink inspired by the timeless stories and iconic DC characters from the Justice League including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman and The Flash.
The multi-course meal kit is part of a promotional partnership between Wonderland Restaurants and Warner Bros. Consumer Products for "Zack Snyder's Justice League" which premiered on HBO Max in March and recently released on Bluray & DVD in the UK with a US release expected within the coming months.
Unlike most meal kits on the market that come packaged in a basic shipping box, the Wonderland At Home kit comes inside a solid constructed themed replica of one of Darkseid's Mother Boxes from the film. A scannable omega symbol QR code is also included on the packaging that features thank you video from director Zack Snyder and allows your smartphone to interact with the Mother Box through some very cool augmented reality.
The meal kit is designed for a dinner for two but comes packed with so much food that you will almost certainly have enough left over for several additional meals and snacks. Every menu item included has it's pros and cons with some being much better than others which we've broken down below:
Ocean Trench
Themed after Aquaman, this seafood appetizer is served in an oversized tin can and features pickled cod topped with batter bits drizzled with "trench dressing." It was very easy to prepare and took less than 30 minutes from box to table. It may not have had the most appetizing look, but was surprisingly tasty. For those who are not a fan of fish, a vegetarian falafel option is also available.
The Big Belly Burger
This dish is the main-course of the meal kit and features two huge "Big Belly Burgers" which are based off the popular DC Universe burger chain. Each burger includes a 6 ounce Angus steak patty pressed between a pretzel bun and a crispy potato & onion rösti topped with sweet & tangy Condiment King burger sauce and very addictive Condiment King cheese sauce. Wax paper wraps and "Big Belly Burger" take-out boxes are also included to complete the theming.
This was hands-down the best part of the meal kit and could easily compete with any Angus burger from a high end restaurant. Just as with the Ocean Trench starter, a vegetarian option can also be substituted for the Big Belly Burger.
Resurrection Soufflé
The resurrection theming on this dessert item is a bit of stretch as it pertains to Superman rising from the dead and this soufflé rises from it's black & silver themed ramekin emblazoned with the House of El's "S" shield and is topped with silver "corn clouds" straight from the fields of Smallville.
As anyone who has prepared a soufflé before can attest to, it is not the easist dessert to make and this one took quite a bit longer to rise than as indicated in the instructions with the end result being quite a bit soggy. However, the Ressurrection Soufflé was still a very delicious dessert but take note that this will definitely be the hardest dish to prepare.
Ancient Themysciran Fire
This menu item is designed to create a relaxing atmosphere of a sitting around a campfire on Wonder Woman's Amazonian home of Themyscira and features pre-smoked vanilla marshmallows and palo stick which you burn while listening to Themysciran music which is provided via the Mother Box QR code. Needless to say, the marshmallows are perfectly fine by themselves unless you just want to take advantage of the full themed experience.
Choco's
Taking a page directly from the comics, Choco's cookie snacks are a junk food favorite of Martian Manhunter's (who has a very brief cameo in the film). However, instead of this themed meal kit item being another dessert dish, nothing could be further from the truth as these "cookies" actually contain a mixture of jalapenos, salsa, and cheese.
It should come as no surprise that this was sadly the least appetizing item featured in the meal kit. The cookies were pretty bland and, when combined with the overly spicy filling, the end result was just not all that great.
Chocolate Batarangs
Themed after Batman, obviously, this dessert item comes packaged in a sleek black box from Wayne Enterprises and features two "Batarang" shaped salted dark chocolate treats filled with buttery caramel. These were absolutely delicious and the best dessert items included in the meal kit.
Element X
This energy drink powder is named after the legendary metal that powers Cyborg's change engine in his armor. The powder is mixed with one liter of water and has a distinct raspberry taste which was pretty palbable when combared to other name brand energy drinks and provided a noticable energy boost. Two disc-shaped lights that blink red and white are also included which can be placed under your water bottle to add an extra bit of Cyborg theming.
Jitters Coffee
Based on the popular Central City shop "Jitters" from CW's The Flash, these two cans of Jitters cold brew feature an oatmeal latte blend that is quite tasty and refreshing. Hopefully this will become an item that Warner Bros. and DC might consider releasing on a permanent basis in coffee shops and stores worldwide.
Koul Brau - Night and Day
This beer brewing company first appeared in the video game "Batman: Arkham Origins" and is a subsidiary of LexCorp. Featured with meal kit is one can of Indian pale lager (Koul Brau By Day) and one can of dark lager (Koul Brau By Night). While both brews were exceptionally good, the Koul Brau By Night was easily the better of the two as, in my opinion, dark lagers usually are better than pale lagers.
All-in-all, the Mother Box meal kit certainly lives up to hype and features a meal fit for a King. While the themed box and Superman ramekin make for a great collector's items, an additional standalone collectible such as a statue or figurine would have made for a nice bonus item.
The Wonderland At Home "Mother Box" meal kit retails for US$130 and, with the overall quality and assortment of food items, is definitely worth the price. Order one for your very own (standard or vegetarian) from Wonderland at Home while supplies last!
