Animated "Kingdom Come" Film Scrapped by DC Studios

An animated film adaptation of the 1996 Elseworlds miniseries, "Kingdom Come" by Mark Waid and Alex Ross - which fans have long hoped for - has unfortunately been scrapped by DC Studios.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, executive producer Butch Lekic revealed that the storyline would have taken place following the events of the latest Tomorrowverse animated film, "Justice League: Warworld" which continues a story-arc that began in 2020 with "Superman: Man of Tomorrow".

"We originally talked about Kingdom Come after this, but changing regimes, we couldn't go forward with anything like that," stated Lekic. "They might incorporate it in the future with the New World, but that was one that we talked about as an obvious possibility to continue. Not this continuity, but something more Justice League and larger. Again, it's personal and individual stuff that I would like to do, and I like the one comic book or two comic book issue stories. I think adapting graphic novels, there's too much in there. Whereas if you just take two of the miniseries stuff, you can make a better story."

Set within an alternate future of the DC Universe, "Kingdom Come" involves a new generation of heroes who have lost their moral compass, becoming as reckless and violent as the villains they fight. The previous regime of heroes - the Justice League - returns under dire circumstances, which sets up a battle of the old guard against these uncompromising protectors in a conflict that will define what heroism truly is and determine the future of the planet.

Elements of the "Kingdom Come" storyline may be adapted into the reboot of the DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran as the miniseries has been referenced as inspiration for "Superman: Legacy" along with "All-Star Superman", "Superman: Birthright", and "Action Comics #866-870" (aka "Brainiac).
