Actor Sam Heughan Talks Auditioning for Superman

In the latest episode of the "Just for Variety" podcast, actor Sam Heughan talked about one of his first trips to Los Angeles in the early days of his career to audition for the lead role in director Bryan Singer's 2006 film, "Superman Returns".

Heughan reveals that his trainer at the time encouraged him to bulk up in order to have a shot at playing the Man of Steel as he had grown up a pescatarian and had not start eating meat until he came to America when he was 24.

"At the time I was auditioning for Superman, I had a trainer and he was like, 'You need to get bigger. You need to be able to fill out the cape," says Heughan. "He was like, 'Eat more protein.' I remember the first time I had chicken or something and just suddenly, I was like, 'Oh my God, I have all this energy. And I don't feel hungry all the time.'"

Although he ultimately lost out on the role of Superman to Brandon Routh, Heughan would later have the opportunity to take on the lead superhero role of Batman in the 2012 touring stage show production, "Batman Live".

Heughan currently stars in the lead role of Jamie Fraser on the hit Starz television series, "Outlander" which is based on the novel series of the same name by author Diana Gabaldon and in the midst of its sixth season on the network.
