The first part of the CW's highly-touted "Elseworlds" storyline arc kicked off last night with "The Flash" and featured an unexpected homage to the popular "Smallville" television series which aired from 2001 - 2011.
The episode featured Barry Allen and Oliver Queen waking up to discover they had swapped lives. Realizing that Supergirl might be immune to the effects of whatever was going on, the two heroes journey from Earth-1 to Earth-38.
Upon arrival on the Kent farm on the other Earth, the "Smallville" theme song "Save Me" by Remy Zero begins to play with the same location from the former tv series being used for the scene.
"Just the whole idea of going to the farm and the homage to 'Smallville'... that was an idea that came up pretty quickly," stated The Flash executive producer Todd Helbing during a screening of the episode while also crediting episode writer Marc Guggenheim with adding the theme song into the script.
The "Elseworlds" storyline continues with "Arrow" tonight at 8:00pm ET and concludes with "Supergirl" on Tuesday, December 11th at 8:00pm ET.
