Supergirl Movie Currently in the Works at Warner Bros.

by Neil Cole

A new Supergirl movie is currently in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. with writer Oren Uziel ("22 Jump Street," "Mortal Kombat") being brought in the pen the script.

Supergirl was created by writer Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino and first appeared in "Action Comics #252" (May, 1959) where she was depicted as Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El; sharing his super powers and vulnerability to Kryptonite.

This will be the first time the iconic superhero has been featured on the silver screen since the 1984 "Supergirl" film starring actress Helen Slater in the title role. The film was a spin-off from the first three Superman movies and, even with well known co-stars such as Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, and Peter O'toole, was ultimately a box-office bomb.

The character is currently featured in the hit "Supergirl" television series on the CW and is played by actress Melissa Benoist and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller.

The new movie will join the studio's upcoming line-up of DC Comics-based films including "Aquaman" starring actor Jason Momoa, "Shazam!" starring Zachary Levi and "Wonder Woman 1984" starring Gal Gadot as well as "Cyborg" and "Green Lantern Corps" which are also still in their developmental stages.

As of this writing, there is currently no official word from Warner Bros. in regard to when the new Supergirl movie may premiere in theaters or who will be featured in the lead role.
