December 29, 2010: Superman Artwork Among Items Stolen from NYC Apartment
A print of the Andy Warhol painting "Superman" was among nearly half a dozen pieces of art by Roy Lichtenstein and Warhol stolen from a New York City apartment by burglars who broke through a wall.
The “Superman” print is part of his 1980s “Myths” series featuring fictional characters with mass-cultural appeal, including Mickey Mouse and Uncle Sam.
Thieves also lifted a Carl Fudge oil painting, "Live Cat", and other valuables in the heist which authorities estimate happened sometime during Thanksgiving week, when owner and art collector Robert Romanoff was away.
"An unknown suspect broke through a hallway wall into the apartment and removed artwork, watches and other jewellery. A video recorder attached to surveillance cameras inside the apartment also was taken," police said in a statement.
The total haul was worth around $750,000, the New York Post reported, citing unnamed sources.
