December 13, 2014: Superman's Hometown to Host 'Magical' New Year's Eve

by Michele Longworth

Looking for an exciting way to ring in the New Year?

Then Metropolis is the place to be to see the live, action-packed illusions and magic of magician and mentalist Morgan Strebler’s Inside Your Mind show.

Strebler — a native of Sikeston, Missouri and a special guest during the 2014 Superman Celebration — will perform two special shows in Metropolis on New Year’s Eve as a fundraiser for the not-for-profit organization Save The Massac.

He will perform at Baymont Theater, 203 E. Front St., on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Tickets to are $20, and Strebler will donate 100 percent of the ticket sales to Save The Massac.

A special Live Pay-Per-View broadcast of the 7 p.m. show will also be available. The live 30-minute event will be streamed on StageIt at 7 p.m., and is available for a minimum donation of $5.

As if two shows were not enough, Strebler, like other magicians, has another trick up his sleeve. Near the midnight hour at the Superman statue, he will be hoisted by a crane into the air and suspended in a straight jacket.

Strebler calls himself a “Superman geek,” noting even before he was a special guest at the Celebration, he attended the event several times throughout the years. Strebler said he wanted to do something to give back to the community.

“I’m really excited about this show because I’ve been all over the world, but this is my favorite city in the world. I’m a huge Superman fan, and I’ll do anything to help this community out. It’s such an honor to perform here,” he said.

From bursting clouds in the sky and making them disappear to bending forks and spoons, Strebler, who is known as the Man Who Bends Steel, is a leader in the field of psychokinetic magic, also known as PK, which uses only the power of the mind to physically alter or affect various objects, such as forks, coins and keys without logical explanation.

He has hosted a live show in Las Vegas for 10 years and has performed in hotspots such as Pure at Caesar’s Palace, Body English at the Hard Rock, Caramel Lounge at the Bellagio and VBar at the Venetian. Last year he performed internationally during a tour in Seoul, Korea.

Strebler’s introduction to the world of magic came when he was a young child and went to see the magician Harry Blackstone Jr. “It was amazing,” he said, recalling how the magician floated a light bulb into the audience, and it floated past Strebler. “It was lit up and the most magical thing I had ever seen in my life,” he said.

A few years later he saw David Copperfield in Las Vegas. “That pretty much cemented the deal for me,” he said, noting he wanted to be involved in magic.

When he was around 7, Strebler was immersed in creating his own magic. The first trick he learned was the cups and balls. The first illusion he developed involved cutting his body in half with a checkerboard.

“It looked cool visually and I’ve been creating magic ever since,” he said.

According to Strebler’s website, at the age of 17 he produced his own first full-scale illusion show, which opened with Strebler producing a sports car out of thin air. At the age of 22 he moved to Las Vegas to pursue his dream. He became the youngest magician in the world to catch a live bullet between his teeth, which had killed 13 performers. His feat was featured on CBS Evening News and received front-page coverage on many newspapers.

Strebler has been on television in 106 countries and performed on five continents. Most recently he has filmed multiple spots on an upcoming TV series Masters of Illusion, hosted by Dean Cain on the CW network. He is immersed in pre-production, design and planning for a future television series and a nightly live show.
