November 20, 2015: Superman Statue Design Approved by Cleveland Appearance Committee

The Cleveland, OH Downtown/Flats Design Review Committee has unanimously approved the conceptual design of a Superman monument which will be displayed prominently along the city's lakefront.

Artist David Deming's concept calls for a 36-foot-high monument consisting of a stainless steel sculpture of the "Man of Steel" mounted atop a tapering pylon.

The pylon and sculpture would be set within a circular, 2,300-square-foot plaza embraced by the curving pedestrian ramp at the north end of the lakefront pedestrian bridge designed to connect the city's downtown Mall to lakefront attractions at North Coast Harbor.

The bridge, now being designed by Miguel Rosales and Parsons Brinckerhoff, carries an estimated cost of $33 million and is scheduled for completion in 2017.

The cost of the statue and pedestal is projected to be $3-million or more which will be financed through private donations made to Superman Statue LLC; a new, non-profit, company started by Richard Pace - a founding member of the Siegel and Shuster Society - and others.

Once financing is in place, the goal is to complete the Superman sculpture in time to be dedicated just after the lakefront pedestrian bridge is completed.
