The iconic Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on November 19. Interested bidders may participate in the auction online.
In a career-making move, an obscure twenty-five year old Christopher Reeve was cast as Superman in the 1978 film directed by Richard Donner. The lanky 6’4” Reeve refused to wear a muscle suit under the costume and trained with bodybuilder and *Star Wars* actor Dave “Darth Vader” Prowse for several months to prepare for his role.
Academy Award-winning costume designer Yvonne Blake designed the Superman costume, which was constructed by Noel Howard for London-based Bermans and Nathans. The famous suit was made from a flexible formulated German-made fabric, which absorbed sweat stains.
Reeve played Superman four times and the costumes from each production were reused for various scenes in the sequels.
The label on the back of the blue tunic is typed “CHRISTOPHER REEVE / 12312 WITH MUSCLES / SUPERMAN.”
Reeve became a quadriplegic after falling from his horse during an equestrian competition in 1995. He was an advocate for spinal cord research and died in 2004 at the age of 52.
Bidding for the costume begins at $50,000. Additional information on the costume can be found here.
